Course Description

Foreign Evaluation

Section 520.6 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals contains the eligibility requirements for applicants who wish to qualify for the New York State bar examination based on the study of law in a foreign country. The New York Board of Examiner will not commence review until it is in receipt of all required foreign documentation. Such applicants should allow at least six months from the date of the Board’s receipt of all of the necessary documentation for a decision to be made. Application Fee

The application fee is set in statute by the New York State Legislature and is based on the method of qualifying (see Judiciary Law section 465). Under section 520.6 Study of law in foreign country is $750.

New York’s Skills Competency and Professional Values Bar Admission Requirement

New York’s Skills Competency and Professional admission requirement is under Rule 520.18. The requirement will first apply to applicants who commence their legal studies after August 1, 2016. Contact us to find out more.

New York Bar Pro Bono Program Admission Requirement

The mission of the Asia Bar Review Pro Bono Program is to provide diverse and innovative pro bono opportunities for clients to practice law and develop skills through individualized supervision; advance access to justice locally by working on real cases/projects; and inspire students to develop a lifelong commitment to pro bono service. Our Pro Bono Program is tailored to ensure the compliance of Rule 520.16 of the Rules of Court of Appeals.

Pursuant to Rule 520.16 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals, applicants who successfully pass the bar examination in New York State must demonstrate that they have performed 50 hours of qualifying pro bono service before applying for admission to practice.
Step 1: Complete the qualifying pro bono work
Step 2: Supervisor must complete the supervisor certification on the Affidavit of Compliance
Step 3: Submit the Affidavit of Compliance with your Application for Admission to the appropriate Appellate
Division of the New York Supreme Court
Asia Bar Review Pro Bono Program will work around working clients’ schedule. The work will be in Hong Kong, some of which will be over the internet to accommodate clients’ schedule.

The New York Law Course (NYLC)

The NYLC is an online, on demand course on important and unique aspects of New York law in the subjects of Administrative Law, Business Relationships, Civil Practice and Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Matrimonial and Family Law, Professional Responsibility, Real Property, Torts and Tort Damages, and Trusts, Wills and Estates. The NYLC consists of approximately 15 hours of videotaped lectures with embedded questions which must be answered correctly before an applicant can continue viewing the lecture.

The New York Law Exam (NYLE)

The NYLE is a 50 item, two hour, open book, multiple choice test administered online. It tests important New York rules on the topics of Administrative Law, Business Relationships, Civil Practice and Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Matrimonial and Family Law, Professional Responsibility, Real Property, Torts and Tort Damages, and Trusts, Wills and Estates. The NYLE is offered four times per year. Please note that the failure to take and pass the NYLE before the results of any given UBE are released may result in a delay in admission. There is a $27 fee for the NYLE which is payable to Examsoft.

The Multistate Preparation Responsibility Examination (MPRE)

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is a two-hour, 60-question multiple-choice examination developed by NCBE that is administered three times per year. The purpose of the MPRE is to measure examinees’ knowledge and understanding of established standards related to the professional conduct of lawyers.

Exam Subjects

New York is the 16th State that adopts the Uniform Bar Exam. The UBE consists of the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), Multistate Performance Test (MPT) and Multistate Essay Examination (MEE). It is uniformly administered, graded and scoredby user jurisdictions and results in a portable score that can be transferred to other jurisdictions if you have studied law in the US.
